Description

'Pulling deep from jazz piano history for a new CD, 'Play, Piano, Play'-Pam Drews Phillips proves beyond doubt that these tunes from a distant era still have plenty of life in them. In Phillips' hands James P. Johnson, Duke Ellington and Fats Waller sound as fresh and energetic as ever. She gets right to work with the title track by Erroll Garner, a sinuous, rhythmically challenging bopper that Phillips tackles with her ironclad left hand stride and fleet musicality. Here as throughout the disc she shows her facility for nuanced dynamics, pushing and pulling to build and relieve tension, alternating between rich chordal passages and quieter phrases. Her 'Jitterbug Waltz' is and elegant wonder..Phillips pours on just enough to make your mouth hang open, lost in the pleasure of the tune and what she does with it. The insertion of a long, lavish take on 'Prelude to a Kiss' drips with class, sophistication and feeling. A solidly grooving left hand marks 'Take the A Train' along with a tasty right hand that swings before buildng up a head of steam and shifting into some inpeccable boogie-woogie.The Great American songbook is well represented with 'If I Were a Bell', 'All the Things You Are, 'I Got Rhythm' along with Cole Porter's ravishing 'So In Love', which nearly 70 years after being written always amazes with how contemporary it sounds. Two originals come near the end.. a fun, bouncing Guaraldi-esque blues called 'Pam's Jam' and a slow, pretty, introspective tone poem called 'Breathe In'. This one disc only whets the appetite for more' Jackson Hole News and Guide 12/10/2014.
