The New York Pro Musica under Greenberg and later under Davenport was the most renowned early music group of its day. They accomplished what few--if any--later, more "historically informed" early music groups can boast: THEY BROUGHT EARLY MUSIC TO LIFE!!!(!!!!, etc.) They did not balk at using their imaginations.I can not add to the praise already given to Charles Bressler and Russel Oberlin unless it were to say that Oberlin sounded NATURAL in the high tessitura. He SANG up there, and the result was always beautiful.I can't believe how few New York Pro Musica LPs have been transferred to CD. Get the Play of Daniel and Play of Herod while the getting is good. I play them during Christmas and Epiphany and enjoy hearing holiday music off the beaten path AND SO WELL DONE. My standing message to the powers that be: transfer the rest of the NYPM's recordings to CD. I GUARANTEE that I'd buy them in a heartbeat. Others probably will, too, for I'm surely not the only customer who remembers the New York Pro Musica with so much pleasure.
